Integration of Vocational and Academic Education: Theory and Practice

J. Plihal, M. Adams Johnson, C. Bentley, C. Morgaine, T. Liang

This paper presents theoretical approaches to the current emphasis on integrating vocational and academic subjects in secondary schools and presents a review of the literature. Scenarios are presented which go beyond contemporary practice. These scenarios, and an exploration of issues surrounding the integration of vocational and academic education, suggest that successful integration will require changes in the organization of schools, in instructional methods used, and in the perceptions held of vocational education.
