Opportunities Lost and Lessons Learned: Inside a Workplace Literacy Program

There is a contemporary view that many working adults need and/or desire further education. For some time, educational opportunities for working adults have been located within the context of community colleges, or as part of ongoing adult education efforts. A more recent trend, however, considers the workplace to be an ideal setting for instruction in basic skills. By cooperating in education efforts, both labor and management can be "winners." This paper describes a union-sponsored workplace literacy program conducted in a large metropolitan hospital.
