This paper describes a project that resulted in the development and testing of a computer-based intelligent tutoring system for improving troubleshooting skills in electronics. The pedagogical principles that guided the development of the tutor are thoroughly described. The paper contains a description of the research study that tested the effectiveness of the tutor with students in a two-year technical program. Implications for instructional design, teaching, and future research in vocational and technical education are provided.
