GRIGGS BEGINS JOB AS DEAN OF COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AT UNIVERSITY OF
ILLINOIS
Mildred Barnes Griggs, NCRVE Site Director at the University of
Illinois (UI) has been appointed dean of the UI College of Education,
effective July 1, 1995. Griggs, a UI professor of vocational and
technical education and the director of the college's Office for
Cultural Diversity, was selected as the result of a nationwide search.
In announcing Griggs's appointment, Larry R. Faulkner, provost and
vice chancellor for academic affairs, noted her years of experience
within both her profession and the university. "Her personal
strength, integrity, and balance were especially impressive," said
Faulkner.
MALONEY BECOMES ASSISTANT DEAN AT THE GRADUATE THEOLOGICAL UNION
Maureen Maloney, who has worked with NCRVE as a researcher and with
the Development Program, has taken a job as Assistant Dean for Student
Affairs at the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in Berkeley,
California. The GTU is a consortium of nine schools and seminaries
and seven research centers located throughout the Bay Area. Maloney
works on various activities that bring faculty and students together,
such as colloquiums and workshops, and also oversees the language
certification program.

San Diego, California
NCRVE is co-sponsoring a national conference with the University
Council for Vocational Education on "The Future Agenda for Vocational
Teacher Educators" to be held at the Lowes Coronado Bay Resort.
November 6-7, 1995
Portland, Oregon
David Stern, the director of NCRVE, and Norton Grubb, the UC Berkeley
site director, will be keynote speakers at the 12th annual Work Now
and in the Future Conference at the Oregon Convention Center.
November 16-18, 1995
Orlando, Florida
NCRVE is cosponsoring a conference entitled "Transition from School to
Work". Other sponsors of the conference include the National
Education Association, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Safe
Schools Coalition, Inc.
November 30-December 1, 1995
Denver, Colorado
School-to-Work for Counselors: A Comprehensive Approach is the title
of a Pre-Convention Workshop to be held at the Convention Center.
The workshop will be co-sponsored by NCRVE's Office of Student
Services, AVA, and the Center on Education and Work and will feature
presentations from model guidance programs recognized in national
competitions sponsored by NCRVE. Deadline for receipt of advance
registration is October 27, 1995.
Early Spring, 1996
Washington, D.C.
A Skills Standards Conference is tentatively scheduled which will be
sponsored by NCRVE. The central theme of the conference will be the
integration of academic and industry-based standards.
April 13-16, 1996
Atlanta, Georgia
NCRVE, the National Council for Occupational Education (NCOE), and the
American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) will jointly sponsor
a presession for the 1996 conference of the AACC. The presession will
be delivered by community college personnel who play a key role in an
NCOE task force on work-based learning (chaired by Russel E. Hamm,
vice president for instruction at Arapahoe Community College,
Colorado) as well as representatives of eight two-year colleges that
were identified as providing exemplary work-based learning programs in
a wide range of occupational areas (for example, nursing, culinary
arts, manufacturing technology, agriculture, child care). The
presession will be practical so that participants can get concrete
ideas about how to further develop and improve work-based learning
programs on their own campuses.
