NCRVE Receives Grant to Assess Implementation of Career Majors

In October 1995, NCRVE won a $700,000 grant from the Office of Vocational and Adult Education at the US Department of Education to study the implementation of career majors as a vehicle for high school reform. The study will involve site visits at 30 high schools to observe and interview students, teachers, and administrators, and select the most exemplary efforts to be showcased at a national conference for legislators and educational policy makers in June, 1996, in Washington, DC. For more information about career majors, see "Career Majors: Educating for a Flexible Work Force".

Professor Judith Warren Little Receives Grant to Study School Restructuring

In January 1995, a team of 10 graduate student researchers directed by Professor Judith Warren Little began a three-year study of California's major school restructuring initiative. The $900,000 study has been funded by the Stuart Foundations and the Hewlett Foundation with the aim of informing the public, state, and local policy makers, and local educators about the results achieved through the state's five-year experiment in school restructuring. Little, who is an NCRVE researcher and UC Berkeley professor, is the author of a number of NCRVE monographs, including one on the restructuring of the comprehensive high school (MDS-812) which should be available sometime in 1996.

OSS Databases Now Available Online

The Office of Student Services' (OSS) databases, BRIEFs, and annotated bibliographies are now available online! The OSS home page can be accessed using a World Wide Web browser and pointing it to the following address:

http://ncrve-oss.ed.uiuc.edu

There are four databases which can be searched using suggested keywords: (a) references, (b) educational information centers, (c) organizations and other agencies, and (d) professionals. All of the databases except for the professionals database contain a brief description of relevant resources, contact information, and cost, if applicable. The professionals database includes selected groups from the Office of Student Services' mailing list such as state directors of vocational education, state school-to-work contacts, state career guidance coordinators, and state personnel responsible for special populations. For those who do not wish to conduct their own searches, a list of prepared annotated bibliographies is also available and can be downloaded. More information and links to other home pages (for example, the NCRVE Home Page, or the Office of Educational Research and Information) will be included as we continue constructing and improving this home page.

To access this database and home page you will need an internet connection software package such as MACPPP, Trumpet Winsock, or a Compuserve internet connection, and a World Wide Web browser such as Netscape, Mosaic, or Lynx.
