VOCNET and DISSMN8 Continue to Grow

VOCNET, NCRVE's listserv discussion list for all vocational education-related topics, has grown 4 percent since 15 November, to the current high of 1,412 subscribers. Approximately 460 items were posted from 15 November 1995 to 15 March 1996, by about 270 different users.

NCRVE's listserv discussion list DISSMN8 focuses on educational dissemination topics. If you are interested in discussing what a National Educational Dissemination System (NEDS) might look like, please join in. DISSMN8 now boasts 85 subscribers.

Vocserve Bulletin Board Is Phased Out

NCRVE is phasing out the VocServe bulletin board in order to focus resources on its other electronic services.

VocServe was created back in December 1993 as a place where anyone with a computer and modem (or network connection) could share information and ideas, ask questions, and get information about NCRVE. The decision to offer a bulletin board service with dial-in capabilities (rather than just Internet-accessible services) was based on the wish to include those not yet "blessed" with Internet access. However, access to the Internet has increased dramatically since VocServe's creation. The percentage of dial-in connections to VocServe has plummeted from 60% in early 1994, to 14% currently. We suspect that the remaining modem-only users of VocServe could meet their needs equally well (and perhaps more cost-effectively) by using a local Internet provider to access NCRVE's Internet-based services for discussion (VOCNET and DISSMN8) and information sharing (WWW, Gopher, and FTP servers).

Discontinuing VocServe will enable us to focus resources on other electronic services, particularly via the World Wide Web and expanded electronic mailing list services. NCRVE will assist current VocServe users to find alternative methods of meeting their electronic communications needs. Call me at (800) (old phone deleted) with any questions.
