The Internet offers a vast collection of journals, newspapers, briefs and digests to help vocational and technical educators keep abreast of their field. But knowing where to find them can be difficult, so this issue offers an applicable sample of useful publications. Although many publications provide tables of contents or sample articles from print versions, those discussed in this issue provide full text.
Journals
The Scholarly Communications Project at Virginia Tech
maintains a searchable archive of 20 scholarly journals at
http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/ejournals/,
including the Journal of
Industrial Teacher Education, the Journal of Technology
Education, the Journal of Technology Studies and the Journal
of Vocational and Technical Education. All JTE issues since fall 1989
are available on the site; issues for the other journals go back two to
four years.
Although the Virginia Tech site is the most impressive full-text
collection, a number of other journal sites provide tables of contents
or sample articles. The ERIC Clearinghouse for Adult, Career and Vocational
Education's "Journals on the Web: A Mini-Guide" at
http://ericacve.org/journals.htm
offers links to more than 30 periodicals.
Newspapers
Education Week's site at www.edweek.org includes an
archive of past issues that is searchable by key word or date. The site
also has a daily news feature that includes articles from other online
newspapers through Web links. Another useful feature is a comprehensive
guide to school-to-work at www.edweek.org/context/topics/work.htm
that
provides links to STW articles published in Education Week and
other resources on the Web.
Briefs and Digests
The ERIC/ACVE clearinghouse has produced almost 100 short
topical digests over the years in four series: digests, trends and
issues alerts, myths and realities and practical application briefs.
These are all available at http://ericacve.org/pubs.htm
and can be
browsed by title, subject or key word.
The National School-to-Work Learning and Information Center has produced more than 30 resource bulletins on various STW topics. Each bulletin includes contact information for effective programs, organizations and publications. Bulletins can be browsed by title at www.stw.ed.gov/factsht/bulltoc.htm. The site also has a small collection of fact sheets at www.stw.ed.gov/factsht/facttoc.htm.
The National Center for Research in Vocational Education's collection of
20 CenterFocus digests at http://ncrve.berkeley.edu/CenterFocus/
also provides cogent information on a range of current topics that can
be searched by title or key word.
This "NET Gain" was compiled by David Carlson and Peter Seidman
(NCRVE, University of California at Berkeley). An online version of this column is
available on the NCRVE World Wide Web server
(http://ncrve.berkeley.edu/NetGain/).
Readers are encouraged to let the authors know about any changes in the resources
listed, as well as about others they find useful.
