National Data Needs for Vocational Education

E. G. Hoachlander

This document addresses the historic problem of obtaining accurate, comprehensive data for vocational education. It reviews past efforts to collect national information on vocational education; examines the reasons collecting accurate, consistent data has proved so difficult; and turns to information that is needed for national policy and accountability. It considers what kinds of data are needed in five areas: (1) governance, (2) student information, (3) staffing, (4) finance, and (5) facilities and equipment.
