Vocational education is now in a transformational period due to changes in the nature of work, increasing public demands upon the educational system, and changes in the ethnic/cultural composition of the student body. The necessity for good leaders becomes especially critical during periods of change. What constitutes effective leadership? Certain attributes have been postulated as shaping and guiding effective leadership behaviors in a wide variety of vocational education situations. NCRVE conducted a series of three studies which reveal a strong relationship between the postulated leadership attributes and effectiveness. This reprint, first published in the Summer 1991 issue of the Journal of Industrial Teacher Education, presents data from these three studies.
